Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential.
Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP): Candidates for licensure as a specialist in school psychology who hold a currently valid NCSP or who have graduated from a training program approved by NASP or accredited in school psychology by the APA will be considered to have met the training and internship qualifications. The Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists oversees the credentialing of LSSPs.
All other applicants must have completed a graduate degree in psychology from a regionally accredited academic institution, and have completed at least 60 graduate level semester credit hours, no more than 12 of which may be internship hours. Applicants must have completed internship with a minimum of 1200 hours, of which 600 must be in a public school.
The credential requires receipt of a passing score on a nationally recognized qualifying examination determined to be appropriate by the board and on any other examination required by the board
An applicant for the specialist in school psychology license who meets all requirements, prior to taking and passing the Jurisprudence examination, may, in accordance with Board rule 465.38(4) of this title (relating to Psychological Services in the Schools), practice under supervision as a trainee for not more than one calendar year
Continuing Education Requirements:
Renewal occurs each year and requires 20 CPD hours. Of these 20 hours, all licensees must complete a minimum of three hours of professional development per year in the areas of ethics, the Board's Rules of Conduct, or professional responsibility, and a minimum of three hours in the area of cultural diversity (these include, but are not limited to age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, language, national origin, race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, and social economic status). Rule 461.11 provides more specifics on activities that can be claimed for CPD.
Scope of Practice:
The specialist in school psychology license permits the licensee to provide school psychological services only in public and private schools. A person utilizing this license may not provide psychological services in any context or capacity outside of a public or private school. School psychologists may qualify for the Licensed Psychological Associate, which would likely require additional hours of supervision from a licensed psychologist.
