Accepts NCSP as a route to school based credential.
Requires graduation from a NASP- or APA-approved program.
An applicant shall have completed a program of graduate study that is currently approved (or that was approved at the time of graduation) by NASP or APA, or hold the NCSP, in preparation for service as a school psychologist through one of the following options:
- Completion of a master's degree with sufficient graduate semester hours beyond a baccalaureate degree to total 60
- Completion of a specialist's degree of at least 60 graduate semester hours with or without completion of a terminal master's degree program
- Completion of a doctoral degree program of at least 60 graduate semester hours with or without completion of a terminal master's degree program or specialist's degree program
The Initial professional service license is valid for 2 years, at which point one would qualify for the Standard professional service license which is valid for 5 years.
A 1-year Class A license (nonrenewable) may be issued to an individual who must complete an internship or thesis as an aspect of an approved program leading to the school psychologist endorsement.
Continuing Education Requirements:
Initial: No renewal credits required
Standard: 4 renewal credits (or 2 renewal credits if the applicant holds a doctor's or specialist's degree) and the mandatory reporter training for child and dependent adult abuse.
Acceptable credits include: Semester hours of college credit from a regionally accredited college or university staff development license renewal credit from an Iowa area education agency.
Scope of Practice:
The SEA credential does not allow for practice in any other arena other than the schools. To practice outside of schools, one must apply through the Iowa Board of Psychology (Iowa Department of Public Health).
School psychologists may also be eligible for a supervisory credential as a Professional service administrator. The holder of this endorsement is authorized to serve as a supervisor of special education support programs. An applicant must hold a master's degree in school psychology and have a minimum of 16 graduate semester hours to specifically include the following:
- Consultation process in special or regular education.
- Current issues in special education administration.
- Program evaluation.
- Educational leadership.
- Administration and supervision of special education.
- Practicum: Special education administration. Note: This requirement may be waived based on 2 years of experience as a special education administrator.
- School personnel administration.
- Evaluator approval component.
- Have 4 years of support service in a school setting as a school psychologist.
- Meet the practitioner licensure requirements for school psychologists.
