SEA Credential:
Initial Professional Student Support Certificate: The Initial Professional Student Support Certificate is valid for 3 years and is issued to an applicant who completes an approved master's degree in school psychology from an accredited institution of higher education. 
Professional Student Support Certificate: Valid for 5 years and is issued for to an applicant who has completed 6 semester hours of coursework from an accredited institution of higher education; or who has a salary classification of MA+30 or higher and has completed 2 years of experience, one of which must have been completed in West Virginia, and receives the recommendation of the county superintendent.  
Temporary Professional Student Support Certificate: Issued to applicants who have completed a school psychologist program from a regionally accredited college or university outside of West Virginia with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and are eligible to be recommended by the college or university but have not met the testing requirements established by the West Virginia Board of Education. [147 on Praxis exam]
Permanent Professional Student Support Certificate: Issued to an applicant who holds or is eligible to hold the Professional Student Support Certificate valid for 5 years, and has completed 5 years of educational experience, and receives the recommendation of the county superintendent.

All require minimum score of 147 on the Praxis exam

Note:* The WV Board of Examiners has a two-level license. Level I allows for contractual work for school psychologists in a school setting, school system, or other educational state agency. Level II allows private practice of school psychology services as defined in the state statute. Board of Examiners requires a 147 on the Praxis exam.

Continuing Education Requirements:
The Professional Student Support Certificate is valid for 5 years and shall expire on June 30 of the last year of its validity. To renew, one must submit a renewal application on January 1 of the year in which the license expires, and must submit evidence of holding a minimum of an MA plus 30 salary classification based on the awarding of a master's degree.

Permanent Professional Student Support Certificate remains valid permanently unless surrendered, suspended, or revoked.

Scope of Practice:
The WV Department of Education credential allows for work in public schools, pre-K and early childhood settings, and private and charter schools. Work for a school system on a contractual basis requires a Level 1 School Psychologist License from the WV Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Work outside of the school system must be done by Level 2, Licensed School Psychologist, Independent Practitioner, through the WV Board of Examiners of Psychology. The WV Board of Examiners requires a minimum score of 147 on the Praxis exam to qualify for the School Psychologist License.
