Specialist Level

The overarching goal of the program is to train school psychologists with the requisite knowledge and skills to deliver the highest quality psychological services to children and youth. The program encourages students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the provision of psychological services to a society that is diverse in terms of, for example, language, race disability status, religion, cultural background, and sexual orientation. This is accomplished through discussion of current research related to diversity in areas such as assessment, diagnosis, and consultation.  The program also emphasizes the importance of students' clear understanding of ethical practices and their judicious implementation in the delivery of services to children and youth from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Comprehensive Program:

The School Psychology program at University of Arizona is considered to have comprehensive model of training and financial support. Comprehensive programs are those that include student minority representation, multicultural curricular emphasis, faculty members involved in minority research and outreach, recruitment and financial retention strategies in the form of research and training grants.

Retention & Recruitment

Funding is available through the program that covers all or a portion of the student's tuition and/or related fees. In addition, special materials and methods are used to recruit candidates from CLD backgrounds along with special retention strategies.

Field Placements

Students are provided with placements in schools serving a high number of CLD students and assigned to supervisors that have had training or experience working with diverse populations. Because the program is located in Arizona, school psychology students have unique opportunities to work with Hispanic/Mexican American and Native American minority group children. Many of the program's practicum and internship sites are also located in school districts that have high enrollments of Hispanic and Native American students.

As part of the curriculum at the University of Arizona, a combination of required multicultural courses and content infused throughout the curriculum are used to enhance learning and competency in diversity issues.
