Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
This legislation guarantees certain rights to people with disabilities. Section 504 prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. The requirements apply to employers and organizations that receive funding from a federal department or agency, which includes many hospitals, nursing homes, mental health centers, etc. Organizations and employers are forbidden from denying individuals with disabilities equal opportunity to receive benefits and services from the program. Individuals with disabilities who are eligible are defined as persons with physical or mental impairments which limits one or more life activities, such as caring for oneself.
