NASP News: ESSA & Call for Portfolio Reviewers

Volume 44 Issue 5

ESSA Signed Into Law

On December 9, 2015, President Obama signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Passage of ESSA was supported by NASP, and many NASP members contacted their Congressional delegation to urge them to vote in favor of the legislation. Among other things, the new law requires evidence-based interventions, recognizes school-based mental health services as evidence-based Tier 1 and 2 intervention strategies, and contains language encouraging districts to implement comprehensive school mental health services, improve school climate and safety, reduce bullying, and improve home– school collaboration.

NASP Certification Board Seeks Portfolio Reviewers

The National School Psychology Certification Board is seeking volunteer portfolio reviewers to evaluate applications of Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) candidates who have graduated from non-NASP approved programs. It is anticipated that each portfolio will require several hours to review, and that approved volunteers will review approximately three portfolios per year. Reviewers will earn two CPD credits per review. Volunteer reviewers must hold a current NCSP, be a current NASP member, and be willing to attend a training session at the NASP convention in New Orleans. The New Folio Training will be held on Wednesday, February 10, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. in the Sheraton, fourth floor in the Nottoway Room. (Sorry, reimbursement for travel, lodging, or convention registration are not provided.) This is a great way to participate in an important NASP leadership activity, support the profession, network with colleagues, and earn CPD credits. For further information and to indicate your willingness to volunteer, contact Barbara Bole Williams, chair of the NCSP Board (NCSP
