Program(s) Philosophy
High standards, accountability, and respect for an individual's uniqueness within the context of an ecological approach form the core of the Valdosta State University (VSU) School Psychology Program. As advocates for students and families, graduates from the VSU School Psychology Program are members of a problem-solving team equipped to support the diversity and uniqueness of each individual while striving to improve the quality of life in the school setting. Curricular changes within the school psychology program since the previous NASP review reflect Valdosta State University’s commitment to maintaining the high standards necessary for NASP approval.
At VSU, accountability and continuous improvement are sought via a variety of outcome measures such as annual questionnaires, documentation of field experiences through an internet logging system, and academic measures such as comprehensive exams. As part of the accountability process, students at Valdosta State University complete courses with detailed program objectives and take comprehensive exams to maintain performance standards. A relatively new method of accountability for field experience (the internet logging system) has been developed at VSU, and an internship and practicum manual clarifies policy and practice issues related to field experiences. A process for creating electronic portfolios is now available to integrate the student record. Through various data collection techniques, including focus groups, VSU continues to employ a comprehensive self-study process to improve the school psychology program.
To reflect a broad-based training model, the VSU program meets the 1994 NASP Standards for Training and Field Placement Programs in School Psychology and is transitioning toward the NASP standards adopted in July 2000. For example, a renewed emphasis on program and systems-level issues has been included in the advanced practica and internship courses, where VSU students provide workshops to parents and teachers; a separate 100-hour practicum emphases the role of the interventionist, requiring VSU students to develop treatment plans, implement these plans, and measure outcomes; and the role of consultant is the focus of a third 100-hour practicum. New technologies (e.g., use of net meeting, WebCTVista, InternetLoggingSystem.com, LiveText…etc.) are likewise emphasized at VSU and support a program philosophy that minimizes barriers, integrates the learning community, and allows for broad-based development of knowledge, skills, applications, and dispositions.
Graduates of the School Psychology Program are prepared to apply their special knowledge and skills in direct service to students and through collaborative consultation with parents, teachers, special services personnel, and administrators. Faculty prepare applied child psychologists who are "trained to apply the problem-solving process to a variety of settings that include schools, homes, and communities, and who demonstrate the knowledge, skill, and experience needed to provide coordinated and comprehensive psychological services
