Program(s) Philosophy
School Psychology Doctoral: Nationally, and in New York State, psychology is increasingly defined as a doctoral profession. This is especially so in areas requiring independent practice. The graduate of our doctoral program will be a fully qualified school psychologist trained in the practice and science of psychology at a level commensurate with contemporary state and national definitions of psychology. Accordingly, the school psychologist, trained at the doctoral level, should qualify for full membership in local, state and national associations of psychologists and should meet all appropriate credentialing requirements pertinent to psychologists in general and school psychologists in particular.
Several fundamental premises underlie this program's definition of a psychologist. Students should be trained at the doctoral level and be capable of functioning independently in their area of training, keenly aware of the limitations of their knowledge and skills, dedicated to continued growth and training, and firmly committed to the ethical principles defined by peers. The school psychologist is both scientist and professional, involved in both the extension and application of psychological knowledge, and trained in both areas. Within this broad framework it is assumed that no one model is currently known to be ideal for fulfilling the potential of the psychologist in the schools. Consequently, while school psychologists who are trained at the doctoral level are qualified to function independently within their areas of competency, individuals may choose to emphasize one or another aspect of their broad training, and may focus more heavily on either the scientific or applied aspects of their potential role, seeking more intensive training and development in areas of their choice.
Given our location in a large university in a city with an economically and culturally diverse population, our model is to train school psychologists prepared to work with a variety of diverse populations, problems and settings. Hence, our training features a systematic approach to children and their environment.
We define doctoral level school psychology by the way one works, not necessarily by the setting in which one works--in other words, a professional mindset accompanied by relevant skills. The doctoral school psychologist, whether researcher, academician, or practitioner in diverse settings such as schools, clinics, hospitals or independent practice, is sensitive to the ecosystem of the child. This includes recognition of the assumption that fulfillment of a child's developmental needs must take into account multiple contexts including the family system, the school system, the neighborhood and larger community, as well as listening to and respecting the inner world of the child.
Graduates of our programs find employment in a variety of settings serving heterogeneous populations. They work in schools, as school psychologists or in related areas of pupil personnel services, educational research or program evaluation or as administrators; in child guidance, learning disability or psycho-educational clinics; in community mental health centers, in child or adolescent units of hospitals, or in university settings involved in the training of school psychologists and school-based research.
The Ph.D. program is based on the American Psychological Association's traditional "scientist practitioner" concept. This model prepares its graduates for the independent professional practice of psychology with a focus on the research skills necessary to contribute to the scientific knowledge.
