Program(s) Philosophy

Our program philosophy is built upon a scientist-practitioner model of training emphasizing ecological, family-sensitive, prevention-oriented, empirically valid practice and the highest standards of ethics and professionalism. We believe in a full consideration of human development and pedagogy, sensitivity to diverse human experiences and cultures, a focus on early prevention and supportive intervention, collaborative team problem-solving, and the promotion of family involvement in human development and education. The CFSP EdS degree is a highly integrated, four-year scientist-practitioner curriculum that provides a strong foundation in development, psychological and learning theory, general and special education, and legal, ethical and professional standards of practice as well as advanced training in research, measurement, program evaluation and individual assessment linked to mental health and academic promotion, prevention, and intervention. We emphasize collaborative home, school, and community partnerships, team problem-solving, comprehensive assessment linked to functional interventions, and system-wide programming and policy development. Our mission is to provide students the knowledge and skills relevant for collaboration with diverse families, students, educators, and professionals to meet the educational and mental health needs of all students and families within a rapidly changing, global society based on a strong understanding of the interrelationship between environmental, neurobiological, and cultural influences on development.
