Program(s) Philosophy
The mission of Fairleigh Dickinson University's School Psychology Doctoral Program is to educate school psychologists who are capable of linking knowledge, gained through psychological science, to educational efforts in public schools. The doctoral level school psychologist from Fairleigh Dickinson University is trained to combine the basic principles of psychology including human development, cognition and learning, social psychology, and research and theory in order to enhance the intellectual, emotional and social development of students in an educational setting. This may be accomplished through direct services, development of innovative programs, consultation, and by participation in preventive mental health programs and activities within the school and community. The goal of the program is to prepare school psychologists who promote school psychology as a professional discipline, who maintain a continuing pursuit of scholarly activities, and who are concerned with the facilitation of human welfare. The program emphasizes training designed to maximize the educational and psychological development of individuals in urban and suburban settings, and often those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The major impact of the School Psychology Doctoral Program occurs in the New York metropolitan and New Jersey area, a community of people ranging from the economically disadvantaged to the wealthy. It is a large community that demands varied psychological and educational services. Through coursework, practicum, and field experiences, the program attempts to provide students with sensitivity and understanding of the special needs of those whose backgrounds and/or skills make their receiving quality education a particular challenge.
