Program(s) Philosophy
The School Psychology Program at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) prepares school psychologists to work in university settings, schools, state agencies, and clinical settings. The primary goal of the program is to develop professional psychologists whose activities increase the educational and psychological well-being of children and youth. These activities include research, training and practice. The School Psychology Program has a behavioral orientation that emphasizes the analysis of learning, social, and behavioral problems of children and youth within the context of the environments in which these problems occur. Within this context, the School Psychology Program at UCR embraces a decidedly behavioral philosophy (both applied behavior analytic and social learning theory) with a concentration of the scientist - scholar - practitioner model of training. The integration of scientist, scholar, and practitioner roles provides a basis for graduates to assume leadership roles in research and practice within the field of school psychology.
The program is eco-behavioral in nature and instructs students in problem-solving methodology. Students also learn how to evaluate research using empirically-based guidelines. The curriculum is rich with instruction regarding best practices in remediating academic and behavioral problems. Students receive up to date instruction, including how to implement a response to intervention (RTI) model. The behavioral interventions training that students receive leaves them well prepared to take the Behavior Analyst Certification Boards.
