Program(s) Philosophy

School Psychology Program Knowledge Base: The School Psychology Program at The University of Alabama seeks to prepare school psychologists who value and demonstrate reflective practice and ethical decision making through respecting diversity, honoring difference, and promoting social justice. The program provides exemplary graduate training in research, application, and practice related to the learning, development, and mental health of children and youth as well as their families, teachers, educators and other professionals who work with them. The program is committed to preparing graduate students in the provision of effective school psychology services for children with diverse backgrounds and experiences and recognizes the important contributions of both families and schools in the lives of children. The School Psychology Program prepares graduates to assume leadership roles as school psychologists within schools and other settings that provide services to children and their families and as influential school psychology researchers and university educators. The School Psychology Program trains its graduate students in a “family-school collaboration” approach for at-risk learners and focuses on comprehensive early intervention and prevention in economically disadvantaged and/or rural settings. By preparing graduate students to follow databased decision-making and research in the careers, graduates are equipped to pursue and excel in professional practice and research. The School Psychology Program is committed to training that ensures that program graduates are able to apply professional knowledge and skills in delivering a comprehensive range of services evidenced by measurable positive impact on children, youth, families, and other consumers.
