Program(s) Philosophy

The primary objective of training in school psychology at the University of the Pacific is to train highly skilled school psychologists who are capable of functioning as scientist-practitioners in diverse and challenging environments. The department’s commitment to data-based practice is evidenced by an emphasis in all department programs on both the acquisition of a theoretical foundation and the development of critical thinking skills. The data-based practice model is also infused throughout a candidate’s field experiences and internships. We believe that all students can learn and that the principles of psychological and behavioral science can facilitate that learning. The programs are designed to encourage students to question their assumptions and beliefs about both adaptive and maladaptive human behavior, educational systems, their role in society, and the importance of diversity, and to do so with consideration to personal and professional values that inform ethical practice. The curriculum is sequenced to enable candidates to acquire theoretical knowledge, while concurrently applying this knowledge in a series of graduated and diversified curricula, practica, and field experiences.
