Program(s) Philosophy
The LSU school psychology program is a small collegial unit in which students have intensive and frequent contact with faculty members, particularly his or her major professor. Abundant opportunity is provided for students to learn directly about being a psychologist instead of merely attending classes. The program embraces a scientist/practitioner model of training and is designed to develop psychologists who use scientific problem-solving techniques in their research as well as their practice. The orientation is behavioral/ecological, with a focus on children as they function within family, school, and community systems. The program prepares students to develop interventions for behavior and academic problems and has an intense behavior analytic focus. There is a strong focus on "hands on" work in schools, clinics, and institutions. Because faculty and students are active in creating new knowledge through research, graduate students can expect solid evidence-based training incorporating the most recent developments in the field.
