Program(s) Philosophy

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY School psychologists are professionals trained to work with pre-schoolers, children, adolescents, and families. They work with all school personnel to help make education a positive and rewarding experience for students. School psychologists can provide a variety of services including consultation, instruction, assessment, research, and intervention. School psychologists are trained to serve students with diverse educational, psychological, and emotional needs. In the state of New Mexico, particular emphasis has been placed on school psychologists to provide services to students with severe emotional disturbances and behavior disorders. The purpose of New Mexico State University's (NMSU) school psychology program is to train professionals to promote the highest quality educational and mental health services for children and families. In addition, we adhere to an integrated approach to serving a multicultural population throughout program requirements. We follow a multicultural perspective throughout program requirements. The school psychology program is an inter-departmental collaboration between Special Education/Communication Disorders (SPED/CD) and Counseling and Educational Psychology (CEP). The Ed.S. school psychology program is competency based and designed to meet the accreditation standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Furthermore, the program is accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), the only accredited program in the state of New Mexico and the only one housed in a minority-serving institution of higher education. The program also meets requirements for school psychology licensure outlined by the state of New Mexico. The school psychology program adheres to the scientist-practitioner model. This integrated approach to science and practice promotes development of interlocking skills fostering a career-long process of psychological investigation, assessment, and intervention. The practitioner component is emphasized and students in the school psychology program acquire training in the application of the science of behavior and development as well as in innovation in existing theory and techniques. Throughout the curriculum, the importance of knowledge and experience with a wide range of individual differences including, but not limited to ethnicity, gender, disability, age, culture, religion, race, sexual orientation, and life-style are emphasized. Ethical and legal issues, which guide service delivery, are also stressed throughout the curriculum and various practicum experiences.
