Program(s) Philosophy
The philosophy of the Gallaudet School Psychology Program is captured in its organizing theme, “The School Psychologist as a partner in the development of human potential.” As part of the educational team, the school psychologist is a resource for the development of human potential (cognitive, emotional, social, behavioral, and physical), promotes access to the development of individual talents and abilities, and provides outreach to the families, systems, and professions. The Program describes a candidate in school psychology as: an individual skilled in working as a team member and facilitating team problem solving; a practitioner-oriented agent of change; a resource knowledgeable about individual development, educational processes, and intervention; a resource for information about legal and ethical conduct related to children, families, and practitioners; a consumer and generator of research that advances the knowledge base of the profession; and a practitioner skilled at various levels of service to children, including service to the child, the family, the profession-peer, the program, the school, the community, the state, and the nation. From this operational base, the program identifies specific core knowledge, skills, and dispositions that guide the curriculum.
