Program(s) Philosophy
There is an increasing need for the provision of school psychological services in a broad array of settings including schools, workplace, and school-based and school linked health centers. School psychological services are also needed in medical, social service and correctional facilities. At the core of the School Psychology Program at Northern Arizona University is the integration of theory, research, and practice rooted in psychology and education. We use a scientist-practitioner training model that includes a systematic analysis of human behavior, careful applications of best practice, and a methodical evaluation of the effectiveness of these applications. Ours is a carefully orchestrated program of study that emphasizes didactic presentation and practical applications. We emphasize developing skills in the assessment of learning and behavior problems, and serving as an effective consultant with school personnel. Scientific knowledge is used to improve practice in the field of school psychology. In keeping with the Mission Statement of the College of Education, we are committed to the preparation of professionals who are capable of helping create the schools of tomorrow. We emphasize minority student recruitment and the preparation of students to work in rural settings and with culturally diverse populations.
The programs of study for the M.A. and Certification Program include a comprehensive array of courses that encompass the areas of psychological foundations, educational foundations, professional ethics and standards, assessment, interventions, and research. This provides the student with a broad array of skills to deliver psychological services in diverse educational settings. Our graduates are expected to integrate theoretical information from the fields of psychology and education and administer appropriate interventions with children, parents, and school personnel in a variety of educational settings. Students are expected to effectively evaluate the systems they work within and their own impact on the system.
Our doctoral program reflects a training curriculum that is sequential, cumulative, and graded in complexity. We emphasize conducting ecologically valid assessments and interventions that promote positive learning and healthy development for individuals from birth to young adulthood from diverse backgrounds. This involves working collaboratively with families, teachers, parents, other adults, and professionals from various organizations and agencies. School psychologists are trained to provide: (a) comprehensive assessment of abilities, achievement, social and emotional functioning, personality, developmental status, and eligibility status, (b) primary and secondary prevention services, (c) crisis intervention services, (d) consultation, supervision, professional development, and design of comprehensive and integrated services, and (e) educational evaluation services.
Our school psychology graduate training program has two unique specialty areas of training. First, our program capitalizes on the ethnocultural diversity of Northern Arizona and its rural environment by providing students with the opportunity to participate in practica with Native American children within their school, family, and community contexts. A second area of specialized expertise is working with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers from birth to five years of age who have developmental disabilities and other handicapping conditions. This occurs in collaborative training with NAU's Institute for Human Development, an interdisciplinary research, demonstration, and training facility that has been designated as a Arizona University Affiliated Program
Our program philosophy is consistent with the goals and objectives of Division 16-School Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association (2003) and the National Association of School Psychologists (2003).
