Program(s) Philosophy

Central to the mission of the School Psychology Program is to support and protect the essential rights and welfare of children in their pursuit of educational opportunity. The School Psychology Program prepares professionals as producers and consumers of research who are able to apply knowledge from psychology and education to promote learning environments that facilitate optimal educational growth and development. When obstacles to optimal learning situations arise, our graduates are prepared to assess the problem and develop interventions leading to effective teaching and learning. Our purpose then is to train professional practitioners to provide direct and indirect psychological services in educational settings with the aim of preventing and remediating academic and behavioral problems that interfere with classroom learning. This purpose is best accomplished from a developmental perspective considering the child in multiple contexts as an individual within a family, school system, and the larger society. Using a Scientific Problem Solver Model, students are exposed to a broad spectrum of assessment and intervention techniques from various theoretical perspectives including psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, and family systems. Assessment and intervention strategies are anchored in a developmental perspective that stresses the social, intellectual, and emotional growth of the individual from childhood through the early adult years. The Scientific Problem Solver Model consists of three basic components: the training core, the knowledge base, and the scientific method. The knowledge base evolves from the integration of classroom training and field-based experience found in the training core, as applied through the scientific method to problems encountered in the schools. The training core consists of three major areas: foundation areas of knowledge common to the profession of applied psychology (e.g., biological, social, cognitive, and research); knowledge specific to the discipline of school psychology and educational foundations; and supervised field experiences in educational and school-related settings. The scientific method is comprised of problem clarification, problem analysis, intervention, and outcome evaluation. The specific school problems or questions raised for direct inquiry comprise the content areas of school psychology on which the scientific method operates. The primary goal of the program is to prepare students in proficient application of the Scientific Problem Solver Model to the unique problems arising in the educational environment.
