Program(s) Philosophy
The Specialist in School Psychology Program at Louisiana State University - Shreveport is dedicated to preparing highly trained and competent professional school psychologists. The training model is based on Ysseldyke, Dawson, Lehr, Reschly, Reynolds, & Telzrow (1997). School psychology: A blueprint for Training and Practice II handbook. The authors advocate training programs teach the following “critical components”: (a) advocacy and respect for individual differences, (b) empirical knowledge and professional competency, (c) increased collaboration between schools, home, and community agencies, and (d) ethical practice. With the diversity of our public school population, it is critical for students to be sensitive to and respect the uniqueness and dignity of all individuals. We believe that students should be trained as advocates so that all children can have access to their educational, legal, and individual rights. Students should also understand that professional practices are based on empirical research. They should be able to implement and evaluate activities and programs that are initiated in the public schools. As problems often do not remain within the school building, students should also be prepared to assist as a liaison between schools, home, and community agencies. They should demonstrate the interpersonal skills necessary to facilitate the communication between these groups. Finally, the training program is committed to producing students firmly grounded in ethical practice.
