NASP 2014 Convention Special Session

A panel of graduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds presented information about their exemplary projects, activities, and research related to diversity themes during this special session at the NASP 2014 Convention. Sponsored by the Multicultural Affairs Committee.

Session Presenters

De’Amonta Casey is from Riverside, CA. She received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA and her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. She is currently a school psychology graduate student at San Diego State University working on an Education Specialist degree. In April 2013, she was one of 10 students selected to serve as a scholar on the CARES Project (Culturally Affirming and Responsive Education Specialists). CARES is a 1.25 million dollar federally funded personnel preparation grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to prepare School Psychology, School Counseling, and School Social Work students to effectively improve outcomes for culturally and linguistically diverse children in foster care with disabilities or who are considered at risk.

Sandra Guzmán was born in El Paso, Texas, but was raised in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Counseling and Educational Psychology from New Mexico State University and is the first person in her extended family to attend a university. She is a first-year student at New Mexico State University pursuing the Educational Specialist Program in School Psychology. She currently works as a Graduate Assistant for the NASP Program Approval Board. Due to her own personal struggles with acculturating to the United States she plans to focus her research on acculturation and achievement motivation, and cultural factors such as socioeconomic status, generation status and self-esteem. She also volunteers with a bilingual school psychologist in the Kimochis Program for the Doña Ana Early Head Start Program and belongs to a research team on designing an intervention to increase parental involvement in Latino families.

Priti Dave is currently a second year, specialist student in the Queens College, City University of New York School Psychology Program. Priti grew up in Mumbai, India where she earned a Masters in Applied Psychology from Mumbai University. Prior to moving to the United States, Priti worked as a school counselor in Mumbai with students who had language based specific learning disabilities. In this role, she provided counseling to parents and students, as well as developed interventions for the students. Priti is a member of Dr. Sherrie Proctor’s research team at Queens College. The project Priti is involved with examines the experiences of diverse students in school psychology programs. The goal of her presentation is to offer insight into how to improve CLD graduate students’ social and academic integration into their school psychology programs by participating in organized research efforts.
