Suicide Prevention and Intervention

NASP is committed to working to prevent the suicide behavior and deaths of children and youth. Schools and school psychologists play a critical role in youth suicide prevention by:

  • Creating safe, supportive learning environments
  • Educating adults and young people on the signs and symptoms of suicide
  • Identifying students at risk of suicide and other self-harm behaviors, and providing interventions, counseling, and referrals to community services
  • Providing support to students who have attempted suicide, which facilitates their continued safety and successful learning
