Guest Editor's Comments: Experimental Methods for Assessing Intelligence

The present and future of intellectual assessment is shaped by many forces, including public, legal, and professional issues. However, the influence of scientific research is often overlooked as a factor which shapes intellectual assessment. This mini-series highlights the role of scientific research and its impact on the present and future of intellectual assessment by describing and reviewing three experimental approaches to the measurement of intelligence. The ambiguity of the word “Experimental” in the title of this miniseries is deliberate. “Experimental” has at least two meanings: (a) methods which derive from the scientific process of experimentation, and (b) a tentative or prototypic model for further development through experimentation. Both of these meanings apply to the articles within this mini-series. The methods for assessing intelligence in the series are an outgrowth of laboratory research, and are prototypic methods to guide development and progress in intelligence testing.
