Research With the Wechsler Digit Span Subtest: Implications for Assessment

pp. 37—47

ABSTRACT: This paper presents a summary of major research findings relevant to the use of the Wechsler Digit Span subtest in psychoeducational assessment. Examination of the research suggested that digit repetition tasks can play an important role in assessment procedures. The cognitive processes and behavioral characteristics which determine performance on Digit Span are related to complex abilities, but an understanding of the sources of variability accounting for group and individual differences is needed to use the subtest as a diagnostic tool. Recommendations and implications for research and for assessment practice are presented.
