The Cognitive Functioning of American Indian Children: A Critique of McShane and Plas

What is the overall aim of the McShane and Plas paper? The title suggests that it deals with cognitive functioning, but the content suggests that it deals with intelligence testing,not a measure of cognitive functioning cross-culturally unless it can be established that:(a) a universal set of intellectual capacities can be precisely defined; (b) those capacities can be accurately measured; and (c) the measuring instruments are free from bias due to language,culture, administration, interpretation,scoring, and larger cultural context (Reser,1982). If the paper is about testing of American Indian children, then it provides far too little information on the validity, test-retest reliability, internal consistency, and conditions of administration and interpretation as well as discussion of the testing situation itself. This is also the case if it is about providing suggestions for “examiner use and interpretation of the Wechsler Intelligence Scales with American Indian children.” A second major section of the paper seems to consist of factors that might affect Indian performance on intelligence tests.
