The Influences of Home and Family on the Development of Literacy in Children

pp. 369—373

ABSTRACT: This review of the literature of home and family influences on the development of literacy is organized around the child in three major transactions: (1)Child x Environment-the child in transaction with his/her physical environment; (2) Child x Ecology-the child in transaction with his/her living sphere including socioeconomic status, family and parent characteristics:(3) Child x Family-the child in transaction with his/her family members. Discussions range from the view of the child as an individual impacted by specific environmental situations and/or the interactions with specific family members to the emerging systems view of the family as a unit, of which the child is a part.
