Fathers in the Context of Family Influences: Past, Present and Future
Michael E. Lamb, Susan K. Bronson
Social scientists from all disciplines and of all persuasions share a common tendency to examine progressively narrower topics in ever-increasing detail. This strategy has often proved to be fruitful, although the detailed knowledge about the parts is often obtained at the expense of understanding the relationship between the parts and the whole. Unfortunately, the lack of perspective inherent in such a strategy ensures that the “advances” wrought are often illusory. EDITOR’S NOTE: This paper was presented to a conference “Focus on the Family: New Images of Parents and Children in the 1980s” at Wheelock College, Boston, March 1980.
