The SOMPA: A System of Measuring Potential Abilities

pp. 37—46

The story is told of a new arrival at the Pearly Gates who was being given a guided tour by St. Peter. When asked if there was anyone he would particularly like to meet, the newcomer replied, “Yes, I'd like to meet the greatest general of all time.” St.Peter pointed to a man passing by and said, “There he is now.” The newcomer looked puzzled and said, “That cannot be. How can he be the greatest general of all time? I knew him - he was my tailor - he never even fought in a war.” Smiling, St. Peter replied, “I know. But if he had had the opportunity, he would have been the greatest general of all time.”
