The System of Multicultural Pluralistic Assessment
Richard A. Figueroa
The Education of the Handicapped Act (P.L. 94-142) calls for several innovations in the assessment and identification of exceptional children. Tests and testing must not only be multi-faceted and preceded by elaborate due process safeguards, but they must be “selected and administered so as not to be racially or culturally discriminatory.” The System of Multicultural Pluralistic Assessment (SOMPA)(Mercer & Lewis, 1978) is the only set of tests that adequately meets this provision in 94-142.
