The recent publication of the System of Multicultural Pluralistic Assessment (SOMPA) has already provoked intense debate among school psychologists. Much of the discussion regarding the merits of SOMPA reflects incomplete information or misconceptions about the purposes of the system. Thus far the debate has been conducted on an informal basis at national conventions, state meetings, or local meetings of school psychologists. Occasionally, the content of the discussions has reminded me somewhat of the transcripts of discussions that took place in the Oval Office during the early years of this decade.
