Those of us who provide counseling can no longer just apply our university-acquired expertise within the framework of a meaningful professional ethic and proceed to assist student clients. In this, the age of attorney, the school counselor, the school psychologist, and others who find themselves in counseling roles need to be alert to the law. We now must be cognizant of not only the counseled’s best interest, but the counselor’s best interest as well. The risks of legal action are real. With knowledge and prudent action, such risks can be minimized.
