Fair, Rational, Open, Shared Decision-Making: Due Process in the Schools

A few weeks ago, the senior author visited a local school system and learned that counselors there were about to institute a new clarification program. Was the counselor aware that there had been parental concern regarding such programs? (For example, see Stewart, 1975.) Yes, he was aware of such concern. Would he then inform parents of this new program? Well, that presented two problems. His fellow counselor feared setting a precedent, and his principal thought that it would be foolish to inform parents because they might get upset!
