School psychologists, you are not alone! There are others who have been reading the psychological and educational literature. Parents, judges and legislators are telling us to pay attention to the literature, research findings, and ethical codes that indicate what, in 1977, is good professional practice. Professional literature has been used by parents to convince judges and the legislatures that we can do a better job in educating all children. Courts and legislatures have mandated that we follow our own high standards. The consensus has changed and there is a new but not alien mandate of excellence in meeting children’s needs. It will not be easy but we, together with our fellow professionals in both regular and special education, can meet the challenge.
