It is tempting to deal with the rapidly changing systems of our community as recapitulations of the past. Seeing parallels to what has happened before eases our anxieties and helps us to assimilate the new directions. I cannot help but think, however, that the cultural ground out of which new groups are arising is freshly created, possibly even by the erosion of the old. I believe that many emerging social groups are new phenomena.
