A Chief State School Officer's View of What's Needed for Comprehensive Education Reform

Release of the A Nation At Risk Report in 1983 provoked citizens across the country to embark on a mission to improve schools, teaching, and learning. We reacted because we were told that our public schools, compared with private schools or other industrialized nations’ schools, were failing to educate our children effectively. A resulting charge was that we were throwing money at a broken down public education system.
