So often our most brilliant theoretical ideas are undermined by weak empirical results. In the publish or perish world in which we live, such occurrences can be emotionally distressing, casting a dark shadow over your professional career. Consistent nonsignificant statistical findings can shake the confidence of even the most diligent of scholars and result in that most dreaded of eventualities, the denial of tenure.
