Training School Psychologists for Service Delivery to Children With Severe Emotional Disturere Emotional Disturbance

Abstract: Students with severe emotional disturbance (SED) present one of the most challenging populations for school psychologists. To provide effective service delivery to this population, school psychologists need to be expert in effective interventions for children with SED. In addition, the types of challenging behaviors presented by students with SED are equally problematic for teachers when they occur in regular classrooms among students without SED. Unfortunately, many school psychologists enter the profession with only limited hands-on or actual teaching experience with this population leading to potential credibility problems as teacher consultants. Likewise, school psychologists often spend much time in their training program emphasizing assessment over the delivery of direct interventions for academic and social/emotional problems of children and youth.The purpose of the described project is to train school psychology students at the preservice level in intervention techniques especially applicable to children and youth with SED.
