PA066: IDEA's Blame Game: Determining Causation in Special Education Evaluations

Thursday, February 20, 2014 3:00 PM–3:50 PM

Federal law presumes multidisciplinary evaluation teams can identify causes of problems triggering students’ referral for evaluation. This law requires school psychologists to opine about causation when such inferences may be beyond the scope of competent professional judgment or may not be supported by science. This presentation attempts to help school psychologists understand their ethical duties to science and law by explaining case law and ethical codes addressing causality in evaluations.
