MS027: Evidence-Based Alternatives to Grade Retention and Social Promotion

Friday, February 21, 2014 8:00 AM–9:50 AM

The rate of grade retention is rising in the U.S., although research does not support grade retention as an effective intervention. This session will provide a brief overview of research examining the effectiveness of grade retention. The major focus will be on providing participants with a variety of evidence-based alternatives to social promotion and grade retention that facilitate the social and cognitive competence of students and are appropriate for linguistic and ethnic minority students.
