PO024: Physical Activity and Academic Achievement in Elementary School Students

Friday, February 21, 2014 1:30 PM–3:00 PM

Physical activity levels of 839 youth obtained from self-report and activity monitors were used to examine the relation between academic achievement and physical activity. Significant discrepancies between the measures were found, with self-report under-reported compared to monitor data. A significant negative influence of increased physical activity on academic skills beyond minimum activity guidelines was observed (previous academic skill and IQ controlled). Implications for educators considering expanding or reducing school-based physical activity will be discussed.
