WS011: What You Always Needed to Know About Psychiatric Medications and Children

Wednesday, February 19, 2014 7:30 AM–10:30 AM

This workshop will review the psychiatric medicines most commonly used in children and adolescents, including the stimulants and other medicines for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for depression and anxiety disorders, the mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder, the sleep medicines, and the atypical antipsychotics used for psychosis and frequently for disruptive behavioral disorders. Participants will learn how to think psychopharmacologically and will review the indications and side effects of each class of medicine. Finally, the workshop will examine the recent controversies involving different medicines, such as SSRIs and suicide, and stimulants and the heart.
