WS010: Underachievement Among Students From Culturally Different Backgrounds: Implications for School Psychologists

Wednesday, February 19, 2014 7:30 AM–10:30 AM

This workshop focuses on factors that contribute to the achievement gap and underachievement among two culturally different groups of students: African American and Hispanic. Also discussed are two pervasive problems—special education overrepresentation and gifted education underrepresentation—with attention to contributing factors and solutions. An overview of culture is presented, along with attention to cultural differences among both groups. The workshop will provide strategies and resources specifically to help school psychologists be culturally responsive and reverse underachievement.
