2009 NASP Summer Conference - Washington, DC

Advocacy: Creating Capacity for the Provision of Quality Services
Washington, DC, July 13–15, 2009

Effective practice relies on sound policy. Advocacy— professional, personal, and legislative—is essential to securing sound policy. In fact, it is not possible to separate the need to advocate for appropriate policies and programs from positive outcomes for students, families, and schools.

Being able to advocate for effective policies, needed services and programs, and your role is a critical professional skill. Integrating advocacy into your regular professional responsibilities:

  • Improves your visibility and effectiveness.
  • Builds collaborative relationships with administrators and parents as well as school boards and legislators.
  • Builds your capacity to increase allies and resources.
  • Improves your ability to translate the important everyday work of school psychologists into the decision-making terms of educational leaders and policy makers.

This conference offers quality, affordable professional development that links sound advocacy skills to improving services such as school-based mental health, PBIS, and Response to Intervention. Workshop presenters are not only experts in the field but also long-time effective advocates who understand the dynamics of policy making.

This year, the DC conference will be held in conjunction with the NASP Public Policy Institute (PPI), and attendees will have the added benefit of hearing the latest thinking of education policy experts.
