Honoring NASP President Carl J. DiMartino (1943-2007) at the NASP Convention in New York

NASP 2006-2007 President Carl J. DiMartino was instrumental in developing the vision for the upcoming 2007 Convention in New York City. Sadly, Carl passed away unexpectedly on February 23 and we will therefore carry out his vision on his behalf. NASP President Elect Rhonda J. Armistead has assumed responsibilities as NASP President. She and other NASP leaders, if with heavy hearts, will fulfill those parts of the program for which Carl was responsible, including running the Opening General Session and introducing Keynote Speaker James Garbarino.

In planning this convention, as throughout his career, Carl remained deeply committed to advancing best practice and ensuring that all school psychologists have access to, and participate in, quality professional development. His Presidential theme, “Responsiveness: The Fourth R,” reflects a keen understanding of the dynamic nature of the challenges facing school psychologists and the children we serve. Carl’s two Presidential Special Strands, "Responsiveness: The Fourth R" and "Culturally Responsive Practice," are part of his initiative to help school psychologists apply our skills more responsively in a variety of capacities, whether implementing RTI strategies, conducting culturally competent assessments, meeting children’s mental health needs, shaping classroom environments, or guiding systems change.

All who knew and worked with Carl will miss him greatly and his spirit will be with us throughout the convention. We will take some dedicated time at the convention to honor and remember Carl at a special celebration on Friday, March 30, 5:30-6:30, Petit Trianon–Hilton (3rd Floor.) Convention attendees are invited to share a memory or condolence in a “Celebration of Life” book that will be located in the Exhibit Hall at the NASP Center/Membership booth. Additionally, anyone may post a memory or condolence on Carl’s Memoriam page online http://www.nasponline.org/about_nasp/dimartino.aspx.

Carl was very focused on making this convention the best it could be, and truly appreciated the commitment of school psychologists to be there. In planning his welcome remarks Carl said, “Your willingness to continue your own professional development, as evidenced by your attendance at this convention, is a tribute to you and your Association.  As school psychologists, enhancing our responsiveness will contribute to more effective professional roles and improved outcomes for children, families, and schools. I wish you a great conference experience!”

Post and read tributes to Carl.
