NASP Lifetime Achievement Award (LAA)
2013-2014 Nomination Process and Procedures
The NASP Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an outstanding school psychologist who has had a national impact on the field and has dedicated his/her professional life to the development and improvement of school psychology.
Who can nominate?
Nominations will be accepted from two sources:
- State school psychology associations – the state Association President or his/her designee (e.g., President-Elect, Awards Committee chair, NASP Delegate, etc.) may nominate a school psychologist from the state who meets the award criteria. The nominator is responsible for submitting all required nomination materials.
- NASP Nominating Committee – The NASP President, Past President, and the three most recent Lifetime Achievement Award recipients may submit three nomination suggestions that are provided to state leadership for nomination consideration.
Note: Previously submitted nominations may be resubmitted, given that they include updated information (see procedures below).
Who is Eligible?
Practicing or retired school psychologist who work or have worked as practitioners, trainers, supervisors, state consultants, researchers, or administrators are eligible for this award. Possession of the NCSP credential is desirable, but not required. This award may be presented posthumously.
Criteria for Nominees
Candidates for the NASP Lifetime Achievement Award must have:
- At least 25 years of service in the field of school psychology
- Maintained active NASP membership for at least 20 years; must be a current member for fiscal year 2013-2014
- Served 10 or more years in NASP leadership positions (e.g., committee member, chair, or co-chair; interest group chair, elected officer, program manager, delegate; task force member, School Psychology Review/ School Psychology Forum Editorial Advisory Board, etc.)
Candidates will be evaluated in terms of major contributions to the field of school psychology throughout their careers in each of the following areas:
- Direct service to children, schools, and families by providing school-based comprehensive services (consultation, assessment, behavior management, PBIS, progress monitoring, etc . . . ) and/or administration and supervision of school-based psychological services.
- Service to the profession through local, state, and national organizations dedicated to the development and implementation of school psychological services
- Service to the profession through the development of school psychology training programs or through the provision of continuing professional development opportunities
- Service to the profession through research and publications that contribute to the knowledge base of school psychology
Procedures and Required Documents
Nomination materials must be typed in a 10- or 12-point font and formatted to be printable on 8.5”x 11” paper. The nomination packet must include:
- Candidate’s detailed vita
- Please note the new focus of these letters: FOUR letters of support should be included from individuals who are knowledgeable about the candidate’s professional accomplishments. Letters of support should avoid repeating information in the candidate’s vita. They should, instead, focus on providing information about the lifetime of role-modeling this person has demonstrated as a school psychologist using the following criteria:
- Leadership problem solving skills and abilities
- Interpersonal skills with colleagues, parents, children, and administrators
- Respect for human dignity
- Professional and personal ethical standards as defined in the NASP 2010
Principles for Professional Ethics
- At least one letter of support must be from an individual in the candidates’ most recent professional setting
- Letters of support should be no more than TWO pages in length.

Incomplete nominations will not be reviewed. If the packet is missing one or more of the following documents it will be considered incomplete:
- Nomination form
- Candidate’s vita
- Four letters of support.
A confirmation of materials received will be sent to the nominator by email.
Selection & Notification
A panel of reviewers will read and rate the materials and determine the top candidate. All candidates will be informed of the outcome by letter. At this time, committee ratings are due in mid-October 2013 and the award recipient will be notified by mid-November. The other candidates and nominators will be notified by December 1, 2013.
The award ceremony and reception is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the NASP Convention in Washington DC. Transportation to and from the convention as well as lodging for two nights will be provided for the recipient. No advance public announcement or publicity should be made prior to the convention.
