For the second year, PREPaRE workshops will be offered at George Washington University in conjunction with the Public Policy Institute. PREPaRE provides school-based mental health professionals and other educational professionals training on how to best fill the roles and responsibilities generated by their participation on school crisis teams. PREPaRE is one of the first comprehensive nationally available training curriculums developed by school-based professionals with firsthand experience and formal training.

Workshop 1—Prevention and Preparedness: The Comprehensive School Crisis Team (6.5 credit hours)
8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010

This one-day workshop provides school-based mental health professionals and other educators with an understanding of the comprehensive school crisis team and their roles on these teams. The workshop emphasizes the systems issues relevant to the prevention and preparedness elements of PREPaRE. It addresses (a) the importance of preventing and responding to crises within the structure of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary school crisis team; (b) using the Incident Command System (ICS); (c) ways to create safe, effective, and responsive school environments to prevent crises; and (d) how to prepare for crises by developing, exercising, and evaluating plans. All participants will receive workshop presentation materials and a certificate of completion.

Fee: $244 (Includes workshop presentation materials and handouts, certificate of completion, and a continental breakfast and box lunch.)

Workshop 1 Training of Trainers (ToT 1) Crisis Prevention and Preparedness: The Comprehensive School Crisis Team (4 credit hours) (See prerequisites)
3:15 p.m.-7:15 p.m., Saturday, July 10, 2010

This four-hour session is designed to provide workshop participants with the information and practice needed to become a NASP PREPaRE “Crisis Prevention and Preparedness” workshop trainer. Included in this session will be a review of the logistics of workshop presentation and specific guidance on how to present the workshop. Participants will receive the information needed to independently offer this session. All participants will receive workshop presentation materials and a certificate of completion.

ToT 1Prerequisites: Completion of PREPaRE Workshop 1; having purchased School Crisis Prevention and Intervention: The PREPaRE Model. The book can be purchased from NASP for $58 (shipped prior to workshop and brought to workshop) or for $48 (picked up at workshop). Individuals who have already purchased the book do not need to buy another copy but must bring the book to the workshop.
