NASP Graduate Student Research Grants

The NASP Research Committee supports student-initiated research through its Graduate Student Research Grants (GSRG). Up to three $1,000 awards are made each year to students who demonstrate exceptional ability to conduct high-quality research that furthers the mission and goals of NASP and has the potential to impact the field positively. GSRG recipients are eligible to receive $500 Travel Grants to present their research at a future NASP convention.

Eligibility and Application Information

NASP student members in either doctoral or non-doctoral school psychology training programs are eligible to apply. Applications are available in the spring for awards to be made at the next NASP Convention.

2012 Grant Recipients

Charity Brown, University of South Carolina
Charity Brown received her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and is now a third-year doctoral student at the University of South Carolina. For her dissertation, Charity will examine the impact of racial discrimination experiences in the school on African-American youths' psychological and academic adjustment. The study will also explore the protective properties of racial identity in relation to how youth respond to such race-related stressors.

Chelsea Garcia, New Mexico State University
Chelsea Garcia completed her bachelor's degree in psychology at New Mexico State University and is now pursuing an education specialist degree in school psychology at New Mexico State University. For her research project, she intends to investigate factors contributing to the academic underachievement of Mexican-American students. She will identify the relationships between cultural variables, teachers' expectations, culturally responsive teaching, and academic performance and self-efficacy. The goal of her research is to help further the mission of closing the academic achievement gap.
