NASP 2010 Elections

President-Elect Candidates' Response: "What are your qualifications, personal or professional experiences, and strengths that make you a strong candidate for President-Elect?"

Philip Lazarus- Florida

I am an Associate Professor and Director of the School Psychology Training Program at Florida International University and have been involved in training graduate students, serving as an advocate for children and our profession, contributing as a scholar and engaging in leadership for over thirty years.

I have served as President of the Florida Association of School Psychologists, founder and Vice President of FASP Children’s Services Fund, Chairperson of the Florida Council of Trainers and Supervisors, founder and Chairperson of the Florida Board of Examiners in School Psychology, founder and current co-chair of the Florida Emergency Assistance Team and founder of Camp Kadima, a camp for physically and mentally challenged youth that now serves more that 75 youngsters.

I am a founder and past Chairperson of the National Emergency Assistance Team and have provided on-site assistance in the aftermath of school shootings and natural disasters. I led the NASP crisis team in Mississippi and Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and was responsible for placing crisis response materials on the NASP website in the aftermath of 9/11 and received the NASP Certificate of Appreciation, the NASP Presidential Award and the NASP/NEAT “Dare to Dream” Outstanding Contribution Award for my work

I was co-editor of Best Practices in School Crisis Prevention and Intervention and have written dozens of scholarly articles and presented hundreds of times at national conferences.

I have served as Chair and founding member of the Board of Examiners in School Psychology in Florida and developed our state school psychology examination for private practice licensure. I served as spokesperson for Miami school psychologists and helped reverse the termination of 41 school psychologists due to the financial downturn.

If elected, I will work tirelessly to ensure that our society no longer neglects the emotional well-being of our nation’s youth.

Tom Delaney-Washington State

"What are your qualifications, personal or professional experiences, and strengths that make you a strong candidate for President-Elect?"

I currently serve as NASP Treasurer (since 2007).  I have assisted NASP in developing an excellent budget process, characterized by an unprecedented level of transparency and communication, which has helped us through a difficult financial challenge.

NASP is a very successful organization committed to children, their mental health and learning with an admirable ability to bring together trainers and practitioners, volunteers and paid staff, to that purpose. We need to ensure we offer value to members and we owe it to members to communicate with them often and openly.  I feel we have made great advances in the past few years.

The challenges coming to us are those of a successful organization.  Your next NASP President must build on this success to meet new challenges in credentialing, service delivery, preserving members roles and jobs, and fulfilling the promise of this organization’s capacity to positively address the needs of children and families.

I have the managerial and organization skills, leadership and communication skills for this challenge.  More importantly, I can contribute values we all share of transparency, democracy, and respect for diversity, needed of a NASP officer.

In addition to my service as NASP Treasurer, I have had three years experience on the Executive Council as a Delegate Representative and five years in the Delegate Assembly as the Washington State Delegate.  I was the Washington State President and before that the Washington State Treasurer. I am a practicing school psychologist with thirty-four years experience in the State of Washington. I hold a Masters degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Washington.  I also completed the Danforth Program (U.W.) in Educational Leadership. I have worked hard for my state association, for the Western Region of NASP, and since 2007 as Treasurer, and hope to serve as your NASP President.

"What are your qualifications, personal or professional experiences, and strengths that make you a strong candidate for President-Elect?"

“If your actions ‘inspire others’ to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader” (John Quincy Adams).  A humbling exercise, indeed, this detailing of why I consider myself a strong candidate for President-Elect of NASP.  Yet, reflecting on my varied leadership opportunities, these words resonate well.

The recipient of Ohio’s 2009 School Psychologist of the Year Award, current President of the Ohio School Psychologists Association, and Past-President of the Cleveland Association of School Psychologists, I have been honored to lead some of the most dedicated professionals in our field.  By strengthening committee participation to address short-/long-range goals, these organizations flourish within a structure for success.

My current Director appointments to the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital Leadership Board and Kent State University’s Foundation Board, among others, offer me experience in fiduciary management and regulation of growth and development.  As Chairman of the Executive Board of Cornerstone of Hope, a grief/bereavement facility, I guide fiscal oversight, broad-based initiatives, services, and synergistic relationships between coactive agencies.  My previous Governor appointments to Ohio state task forces yielded legislative and judicial insights.

An Adjunct Professor of School Psychology at Kent State University, full-time Practitioner in the Cleveland schools, and International School Psychology Association presenter, I am invested in our profession on numerous levels.

As a NASP Convention presenter (Paper and Symposia) and NASP publications contributor since 1990, Developer/Coordinator of the NASP Adoption & Foster Care Interest Group, NASP Convention Mentor, NASP Children’s Fund member, and NASP Children’s Fund Auction Committee member and patron, I am committed to NASP’s vision, mission, and goals.

Balancing career, volunteer efforts, marriage, and children (now grown), I exemplify the multiple roles many NASP members undertake.  Utilizing my organizational and leadership strengths, I am eager to “inspire others” and respectfully ask for your vote.  Thank you!
